MIT's SparksMatter AI Model Discovers Non-Toxic, Earth-Abundant Thermoelectric Material

MIT introduced a new AI model, SparksMatter, which discovered CaMg₂Si₂, a Ca-filled Mg-Si Zintl silicide thermoelectric material made from stable, non-toxic, and earth-abundant elements. Thermoelectrics convert heat directly into electricity (or cooling) without moving parts, making them crucial for harvesting waste heat from engines and industry. However, current high-performance materials rely on scarce or toxic elements like tellurium and lead. The AI's physical reasoning identified this abundant, non-toxic candidate to address these bottlenecks.
