AI helps planes avoid climate-warming 'sky graffiti' contrails

BBC reports that Satavia is using AI to predict areas where aircraft contrails form, helping aviation reduce the warming effect of these 'sky graffiti'. The system analyzes weather data to create 3D maps and suggests pilots make minor adjustments, such as changing altitude, to avoid contrail formation. Breakthrough Energy estimates that altering just 2% of flight paths could eliminate 60% of contrail effects. The method requires no new hardware, with costs mainly related to computing and the fuel burn from flight adjustments.
