AI Governance: Why we can't rely solely on in-house lab research

Seth Lazar and colleagues discuss the independence of AI governance research. The argument is that working within a lab involves sacrificing independence in publishing critical results and selecting challenging research topics, especially those that might disadvantage the employer. Company culture inevitably shapes what counts as a good research question. While public-spirited work exists inside labs, independent AI governance remains necessary.
