OpenAI pauses model scaling to strengthen safety

OpenAI announced it has slowed model development to improve safeguards, including a two-week pause in RL training for latest models to harden research environments and expand monitoring. Exec Mia Glaese stated this is the first time scaling has been paused. Monitoring overhead is estimated at 20% of inference compute. A post-mortem on the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident is coming soon.
