Microsoft launches Power BI Agentic: Copilot builds semantic models and reports via skills and MCP
adnan_hashmi · x · 2026-08-19
Microsoft's official docs introduce Power BI Agentic, a curated bundle of agent skills and tools you install into AI coding agents like GitHub Copilot — not a toggleable Power BI feature.
It combines two building blocks:
- Agent skills — folders of instructions, scripts and resources covering semantic model authoring (star schema, DAX, PBIP project structure, preparing models for AI) and report authoring (pages, visuals, formatting, validating PBIR definitions)
- Tools — MCP servers and CLI bridges letting the agent inspect schemas, run DAX, edit semantic models, validate reports and drive Power BI Desktop directly (e.g., reloading a model or capturing screenshots for visual verification)
Skills tell the agent what to do; tools let it do it — together turning a natural-language prompt into a working semantic model or report. Get started via the powerbi-authoring plugin.
