EU AI Act Enforcement Starts Today: Transparency Obligations and Fines

Enforcement of the EU AI Act officially begins on August 2. Non-compliance may result in fines and applies to companies outside the EU offering models to EU customers.
Enforcement Structure:
- The AI Office: Oversees providers of general-purpose AI models, especially those posing systemic risk.
- National Competent Authorities: Regulate other AI systems across the 27 Member States.
- European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS): Monitors AI systems used by EU institutions.
Tools & Updates: The EU launched a Complaint Tool for the public and a Whistleblower Tool for industry insiders. Prof. Alessandro Abate was appointed as the Lead Scientific Adviser to the AI Office. Transparency obligations, including watermarking, are now in effect.
