Helios: Generative video shifts focus from quality to real-time efficiency and interaction
AI Engineer · youtube · 2026-08-19
Keegan McCallum (uRun) argues that the axis of interest for generative video has shifted from quality to efficiency and long horizons. Ten dollars now buys about three hours of continuously generated video.
Helios, distilled from a 14B open model, is one of 40 models this year with real-time or long-horizon capabilities. This unlocks new interaction shapes:
- Real-time feedback: e.g., a webcam showing a potential haircut.
- Accessibility: A visual medium for non-text thinkers.
- Cost structure: Moving away from expensive "slot machine" prompting to low-cost live steering.
The main challenge is serving: global GPUs, WebRTC, and synchronized streaming pipelines.
