GitHub breakout acceleration: time to 20k stars drops from years to 1 hour
saranormous · x · 2026-08-18
The time for GitHub projects to reach 20k stars is shrinking exponentially. From 2013-2022 it took years; AutoGPT (2023) took 13 days; Grok-1 (2024) took 1 day; and DeepSeek Harness (last week) took only 1 hour. This 300x velocity shift far outpaces GitHub's user growth (100M to 180M developers in three years).
