PyLate to offload modeling to Sentence Transformers, keeping indexes and tooling
antoine_chaffin · x · 2026-08-18
PyLate author Antoine Chaffin outlines the project's long-term plan: offload the modeling part to Sentence Transformers so maintenance is lighter and dependency pinning gets broader, while the PyLate ecosystem keeps its indexes and the tooling/boilerplates built over time (e.g. mLate, LateOn-Code, ColBERT-Zero).
This follows ST v6.0 merging multi-vector (late interaction) models into the main library, with multimodal support enabling training and use of ColPali and other ColX models with the same syntax.
