Epoch AI researcher Campbell Hutcheson noted that Elon Musk is the only AI frontier lab CEO building his own data centers. He attributes this to Musk's extensive experience in physical build-out from Tesla and SpaceX, giving him a natural competitive advantage. In contrast, leaders at OpenAI (e.g., Altman's software/VC background, Brockman's Stripe background) and Anthropic lack hardware-oriented experience.
