SpaceX launches GitHub competitor Origin amid GitHub outage
eyishazyer · x · 2026-08-18
Five days after Grok Bot, a SpaceX-owned shop shipped Origin, a GitHub competitor that is on by default for every paid account (admins must opt out to turn it off). Coincidentally, about 3.5 hours after Origin's release, GitHub suffered a nearly seven-hour global outage with error rates near 20% across pull requests and its API. Cursor's team called the timing coincidental and mechanical ties non-existent. However, developers spent the afternoon testing the new alternative during the actual outage. Retention and data-use policies for the code Origin syncs are not yet published.
