Cursor Launches Origin, an Agent-Native Git Hosting Platform Taking on GitHub
创业邦 · wechat · 2026-08-18
On the same day GitHub suffered a 7-hour global outage, Cursor (now part of SpaceX AI) launched Origin, a beta Git hosting platform open to Pro/Teams/Enterprise users, positioning itself as a direct GitHub competitor.
Key features:
- Stacked PRs: split large changes into dependency-stacked PRs with visual graphs, suited to agents editing dozens of files at once
- Merge queue: automatic ordering and conflict detection to keep main CI green; built-in AI resolves conflicts across dozens of files without human intervention
- Machine-readable review status: structured API so agents can read/write mergeability directly
- GitHub two-way sync: one-click repo mirroring with full git history; "Detach from GitHub" makes Origin the source of truth
- Ecosystem & perf: Vercel, Depot, Buildkite integrations; native MCP support; 296K clones/hour, 22.6 commits/sec, <400ms global sync
Context: CEO Truell previously said 35-40% of merged PRs on Cursor are autonomously completed by agents, while GitHub's 2008-era human-paced workflow can't keep up. Microsoft shares fell over 3% that day, wiping out $112B+ in market cap.
