Stripe acquires OpenRouter for over $7B, betting on the machine-payments economy

Stripe has finalized a deal to acquire model-routing platform OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, per Bloomberg — over 5x its $1.3B valuation from just 82 days ago.
The strategic logic: open-source models are rapidly commoditizing intelligence. OpenRouter gives agents a single routing layer to pick the best model per task; Stripe's MPP adds a native payment primitive so agents can autonomously pay for APIs, data and services; on-chain execution completes the stack: open intelligence → model routing → machine payments → on-chain execution. Without building its own model, Stripe is positioning itself at the center of the rails that trillions of agents will use to think, pay and act — moving from dominating human payments to leading machine payments.
