Redefining Interpolation vs Extrapolation for the Age of AI
burny_tech · x · 2026-08-17
Based on extensive use of ChatGPT Pro for optimization theory, the author proposes redefining concepts for the AI age:
- Interpolation: Problems AI can solve. These are not trivial; many optimization problems solved by GPT are interpolations but remain difficult, nonobvious, and important.
- Extrapolation: Problems AI cannot yet solve.
The essence is that interpolation solutions stem from combining or extending known theory.
