Career Advice: Don't Confuse Job Switching with Career Progression
_jaydeepkarale · x · 2026-08-17
Switching jobs can accelerate your career, but it isn't the same thing as progressing your career. While a bigger salary, better title, and recognizable company are beneficial, if every move simply provides a different version of the same work, you increase compensation without increasing capabilities. Before making a move, ask what you're actually gaining: harder problems, more ownership, learning from stronger engineers, or getting closer to your ideal role. The right reason to switch can be money, learning, or escaping a toxic environment, but ideally, you should explain how the move strengthens your future career, not just your next paycheck.
