Top 1% US firms spend record $7,400 per employee on AI as investment concentrates

AI spending among US companies is accelerating rapidly, with the top 1% spending a record median of $7,400 per employee per month in July, according to data from Ramp. This compares to $650 for the top 10% and $11.95 for the median firm.
Per-employee AI spending has more than tripled for all groups over the last several months. The surge is widening the gap, with the top 1% now spending over 600 times as much per employee as the typical company, up from less than $1,000 in early 2024. AI investment is becoming increasingly concentrated among a handful of companies.
