Opus 5 prefers Python scripts for code edits, causing silent failures and extra work

DepravedPrecedence · reddit · 2026-08-16

Reddit user DepravedPrecedence noticed Opus 5 in Claude Desktop doesn't edit files directly but creates Python scripts to perform replacements, then executes them. Opus 5 explained it was following auto-mode instructions to prefer Bash, but admitted overusing Python led to silent failures (str.replace no-op), quoting errors, and line-ending issues, making extra work. The user notes Codex always edits directly without intermediate steps.
