Wharton and BU Study: AI Layoff Trap Could Destroy the Economy
MFordFuture · x · 2026-08-17
Economists have mathematically proven that AI will destroy the economy. Researchers from Wharton and Boston University published a paper titled 'The AI Layoff Trap' that maps out the economic end-game of the AI transition, exposing a fatal flaw in competitive capitalism. When a company replaces a worker with AI, it captures 100% of the wage savings, but the displaced worker is also a consumer who stops buying, spreading the loss of demand across the entire economy. With 20 competitors, a CEO only absorbs 1/20th of the economic damage their layoffs create.
