AISI Chief Scientist Geoffrey Irving leaves to found nonprofit alignment org

Geoffrey Irving, Chief Scientist at the UK AI Safety Institute (AISI), announced he is leaving soon to move back to the Bay Area for family reasons. He plans to start a new nonprofit AI alignment research organization while continuing in an advisory capacity at AISI. Irving praised AISI's impact in sharpening AI risk conversations within governments and the public, noting that progress on technical safety research remains too slow and coordination is under-resourced.
