Indie developer Linus Lee (thesephist) posted a pair of tweets voicing reservations about AI creation tools: he dislikes that new tools are elevating a disengaged way of creating — like a boss too busy to care, "just text your bot while out for a jog." He concedes the capability is amazing, but argues great work happens "with our hands in the clay," and that the same tools could let us go deeper instead. His follow-up: intermediation from our arts is for the lazy; he wants to be amazed by what he can understand, not what he can cause to happen.
The tweet links his August 2024 essay "Instrumental interfaces, engaged interfaces." Using the New York subway as an opening example, he describes how he went from relying on Google Maps turn-by-turn directions to internalizing the Manhattan subway map so thoroughly that he can now beat transit apps' time estimates with clever transfers — illustrating the difference between instrumental/engaged interfaces and purely intermediating ones, and arguing that good human interfaces should pull us deeper into knowledge and tools rather than do the work for us.
