Anthropic ordered to pay $1.5B in landmark copyright settlement over pirated books

A U.S. federal judge approved a $1.5 billion class-action settlement between Anthropic and authors/publishers, the largest copyright recovery in U.S. history. Plaintiffs alleged Anthropic downloaded hundreds of thousands of copyrighted books from piracy sites like Library Genesis to train its Claude chatbot. Anthropic agreed to settle to avoid a full trial.
