Light Trace Photonics Unveils Detachable Photonic Interconnect for AI Data Centers
BenBajarin · x · 2026-08-15
Quoting semivisiontw, UK deep tech startup Light Trace Photonics develops Universal Photonic Interconnect (UPIC) for co-packaged optics and pluggable transceivers, enabling detachable ultra-efficient fiber-chip interconnect. UPIC connects processed single-mode fiber directly to photonic chip without micro-optics, bumps, active alignment, or adhesives, enabling mass production CPO for AI data centers. Achieved repeatable detachable connections with loss below 800mdB, passive alignment in 3 seconds, targeting below 400mdB at million units. Currently TRL 5, entering reliability validation in 18 months. Founded 2021, CEO Jake Biele, CTO Dominic A. Sulway, advisor Anthony Yu (ex-GlobalFoundries). BenBajarin comments Lightmatter is already down this path.
