StackOverflow monthly questions plummet to 1,304 as AI kills public Q&A, study finds

StackOverflow, the programming Q&A site with 24 million questions, is in terminal decline. In July 2026, only 1,304 questions were asked globally, down from a peak of 207,000 in March 2014. Developer Daniel Lockyer's chart on X sparked debate about AI training data drying up.
Decline trajectory: Growth (2008-2013) → Plateau (2014-2017, >2M questions/year) → Decline (2022: 1.34M, 2023: 790K, 2024: 400K, 2025: 110K). First 7 months of 2026 total 12K, equivalent to about two days in 2016.
Causes: Decline predates ChatGPT by 8 years; stricter moderation since 2014 alienated new users (2022 study: 49% of new posts closed or ignored). Post-2022, ChatGPT and IDE assistants made asking questions unnecessary.
Parallel cases: Chegg lost 99% market cap, Fiverr buyers down 21.9%, Upwork clients down 4.7K, Wikipedia traffic down 8%, Quora pivoted to Poe. Pattern: categories where AI answers are functionally equivalent collapse fastest.
Expert exodus: Kenny Ching's study of 24,304 contributors found high-reputation users leaving faster, calling it "signal compression"—when AI can produce similar quality, real effort is no longer recognized. StackOverflow 2025 survey: 84% use AI tools, but only 29% trust accuracy.
Future: Existing corpus is CC BY-SA, but new knowledge may shift to private interaction logs. Google opened document APIs, framework maintainers build their own Q&A. The public nature of forum Q&A may vanish, but blogs and niche communities could resurge.
