Economist calls compute tax a "dumb idea" violating optimal taxation basics
sebkrier · x · 2026-08-15
Economist Brian Albrecht argues strongly against the proposed "compute tax," stating it fails basic principles of optimal taxation: don't tax capital, intermediate goods, easily manipulable items, or small tax bases. While taxing compute might slow down automation, it increases deadweight loss and reduces output and total surplus, making it a bad idea economically.
