FLIM imaging reveals long-distance non-neural bioelectric patterns

drmichaellevin · x · 2026-08-15

This study applies quantitative Fluorescent Lifetime Imaging (FLIM) for optical estimation of membrane potential to map bioelectric dynamics in spreading Xenopus laevis neural crest cells. It reveals the presence of long-distance non-neural bioelectric patterns persisting from seconds to hours. Deciphering this 'bioelectric code' remains a core challenge for biomedical translation and understanding the evolutionary basis of neural intelligence.
