Over 1,300 Top AI Researchers Sign Warning on Runaway AI Risks
AryHHAry · x · 2026-08-15
More than 1,300 frontier AI researchers and engineers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Meta have signed an open letter titled “Pacing the Frontier.”
Signatories include key figures like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki, Meta Chief Scientist Shengjia Zhao, and Google AI Safety VP Anca Dragan.
Key points of the letter:
- Frontier labs are close to automating AI research itself (recursive self-improvement).
- There is a genuine risk that system capabilities could accelerate faster than humanity's ability to understand or control them.
- It does not call for a pause now but urges the US government to support international efforts to build technical and governance frameworks to enable deliberate “pacing” of the frontier if necessary.
