Neuroscientist Anil Seth reiterates that it is vanishingly unlikely for silicon-based digital AI systems like modern LLMs to support consciousness. While conscious AI via synthetic biology or brain-like systems is plausible, he suggests it would require systems much more similar to biology than functionalists think.
