Developers report Claude has started over-engineering tasks in recent weeks
TheRealShamanoid · reddit · 2026-08-15
Developers have observed that Claude (versions Fable 5 and Opus 5) has recently begun "over-engineering" tasks significantly. For instance, when asked to add simple, non-sensitive headers to an internal HTTP request, Claude proposed a complex array of security measures regarding header injection, shared secrets, and WAF rules, seemingly turning a small task into a major coding session. This behavior persists across different codebases despite proper documentation and memory retention. The author speculates it might be due to system prompt changes and asks if others have noticed this shift.
