Hacker Compiles Doom Renderer into 21B-Parameter Transformer, No Training, 40 Min/Frame on B200
notforrob · reddit · 2026-08-14
Reddit user notforrob shared a project where he compiled Doom's rendering algorithm into a 21B-parameter transformer without training. He wrote a compiler that converts computation graphs into transformer weights and ported Doom's algorithm into a compatible graph. The generated checkpoints load on Hugging Face without trustremotecode. Feeding a prompt representing scene data, the model generates token sequences with pixel drawing commands, which can be applied to render the classic E1M1 frame. One frame requires a 3,614-token prompt and 53,747 generated tokens, taking 40 minutes on a B200. Original Doom ran at 35 FPS on a 486; this achieves 35 FPD (frames per day) on a B200.
