At the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians, Fields Medalist Terence Tao gave a talk titled 'Mathematics in the Age of AI.' He argued that assuming AI will soon handle a reasonable fraction of mathematical tasks, the field must ask philosophical questions: Why do we do math? What counts as successful math? Focusing on problem-solving, he noted AI is already good at providing and verifying proofs, but math is much more.
