anselm · x · 2026-08-14
Open-source geospatial renderer forge3d just passed 600 stars on GitHub. Author @milosgis says it started as an experiment in making "beautiful, data-faithful 3D maps" without turning the workflow into a maze of heavy tools, exports and workarounds, and has grown into a Python-first geospatial rendering package.
- Rust + WebGPU (wgpu) under the hood, shipped as Python wheels for fast, headless 3D rendering
- Handles terrain, imagery, vectors, point clouds, overlays, labels and animation, with production-ready, print-resolution outputs
- The README shows Mount Shasta path-traced with global illumination and terrain shadows; the repo has 1,300+ commits
