As talk of Anthropic employees' impending philanthropy resurfaces, Transformer reshared Celia Ford's in-depth March piece on where this wave of "Anthropic wealth" will go:
- Scale: Anthropic closed a round at a $380B valuation in mid-February, then opened a tender offer letting current and former employees sell up to $6B in shares for the first time; an IPO expected within the next year would unlock far more.
- Pledges: All seven co-founders, including siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, have pledged to donate 80% of their wealth. Forbes estimates each holds 1.8%; at the current valuation an IPO would make each pledge worth $5.4B, or $37.8B combined — nearly 10x what Coefficient Giving, one of the world's largest research-driven grantmakers, has given away in its entire history, and nearly 4x the estimated wealth of its biggest funder, Dustin Moskovitz.
- EA entanglement: Though the Amodeis have distanced themselves from effective altruism, their public entanglement with the movement matters. The coming wave could flood EA-aligned nonprofits with cash — whether that's good depends on who you ask.
