MIT study: Daily ChatGPT use reduces brain connectivity in writers, persists after stopping

A study by MIT Media Lab's Nataliya Kosmyna, published June 2025, examined how daily ChatGPT use affects writers' brains. 54 adults wrote SAT-style essays in three groups: ChatGPT-only, Google-only, and no tools. EEG showed ChatGPT users had the lowest neural connectivity, declining over sessions, and by sessions 3-4 they mostly prompted and copy-pasted. Essays were shorter and more robotic. When forced to write without tools, their brain activity did not recover, indicating accumulated cognitive debt.
