Jiahui Yu, Core Multimodal Researcher at Meta Superintelligence Labs, Leaves to Found Startup

Jiahui Yu, core multimodal lead at Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), announced his departure to start a new company. This move comes just 8 days after his team released MuseSpark 1.2 and only 14 months after he joined Meta. Yu, who previously contributed to Gemini at Google and led the Perception team at OpenAI, has not disclosed details about his startup's direction or funding.

Yu's exit highlights Meta's growing challenges in talent retention. Following massive layoffs and reorganizations under the guise of "efficiency" starting in May, a pervasive sense of insecurity has spread within the company. According to tech author Gergely Orosz, many reassigned engineers are now actively seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Although Meta has attempted to retain key talent with aggressive counteroffers, the results have been poor. Orosz noted that all 7 engineers he tracked who received counteroffers ultimately left. As the AI talent war shifts to a "retention phase," Meta is paying the price for the trust depleted during its internal restructurings.
