This is frequently seen in AGI discussions: it is used either as a thought-terminating cliché (e.g., claiming AGI is inevitable, so I must build it first) or as an emotional crutch (e.g., believing immortality within one's lifetime is inevitable to justify extreme biohacking and health routines).
