Microsoft Removes Emotive Mico Avatar from Copilot Voice Mode

The Verge AI · rss · 2026-08-14

Microsoft announced that Mico, the emotive yellow blob avatar featured in Copilot's voice mode, is being retired. Mico will be relocated to Microsoft's Learn Live platform, where the avatar will have "more to react to," according to the company.

Launched last October alongside Copilot's voice mode, Mico was heavily promoted by Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman as a way to give the chatbot a unique, interactive "identity." The avatar provided real-time facial expressions and animations based on user speech. This move adds Mico to the long list of retired Microsoft virtual assistants, alongside Clippy and Cortana.
