SemiAnalysis: DeepMind Overhaul Signals Gemini's Downfall, GCP Emerges as Winner
ben_j_todd · x · 2026-08-14
Prominent analytics firm SemiAnalysis reports that Google's complete overhaul of DeepMind's leadership is a massive red flag. Demis Hassabis is out of day-to-day operations, while Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals have left to start a new lab.
The article argues that DeepMind is effectively no longer a frontier lab, with their odds of releasing a SOTA model dropping to zero. However, the biggest beneficiary of this internal turmoil is neither OpenAI nor Anthropic, but Google Cloud (GCP). Previously locked in a desperate internal fight for compute with Gemini, GCP chief Thomas Kurian has won, and GCP revenue growth is expected to accelerate meaningfully as a result.
