Fireworks AI CEO: Big Labs Avoid Fine-Tuning Because the Economics Don't Work

Lin Qiao, CEO of Fireworks AI, points out that the reason fine-tuning via OpenAI's API never truly took off is economical, not technical. Training frontier models is so expensive that the only way the math works is by selling a single model to everyone. Supporting millions of custom fine-tuned versions is a completely different business model, which is simply not what the major AI labs are built to do.
