In a podcast interview with wandb, Fireworks AI CEO Lin Qiao explained that OpenAI and other major labs moved away from fine-tuning not for technical reasons, but because the economics don't work.
- High training costs: Training frontier models is so expensive that the only viable business model is selling a single, standardized model to everyone to achieve scale.
- Different business model: Supporting custom fine-tuned versions for millions of users is a completely different business that doesn't align with what major labs are built to do.
