a16z Invests in Vals: An Independent Eval Layer as Benchmarks Diverge from Reality
JenniferHli · x · 2026-08-14
a16z has announced its investment in Vals, an independent AI evaluation platform. The firm points out that the industry's heavy reliance on academic benchmarks is becoming obsolete, as frontier models saturate public datasets and are explicitly optimized to game leaderboards.
This creates a dangerous divergence between high benchmark scores and actual real-world performance. As models transition from answering simple questions to executing complex, multi-step workflows in finance, law, and coding—often operating autonomously as agents—the cost of choosing the wrong model skyrockets.
Vals aims to solve this by building a trust layer. The platform collaborates with domain experts to turn real professional workflows into rigorous benchmarks, utilizing automated grading systems to evaluate the final work product against expert standards.
