Ayar Labs Hits $3.75B Valuation, Using Silicon Photonics to Solve GPU Bottlenecks

As AI systems scale up, moving massive amounts of data between GPUs has become a critical bottleneck in compute infrastructure. Traditional copper connections are hitting physical limits in bandwidth, distance, and power consumption.
To address this, Berkeley professor Vladimir Stojanović co-founded Ayar Labs, pioneering the use of light instead of electricity for chip-to-chip communication. Their optical I/O technology is designed to connect thousands of GPUs across racks with the high bandwidth, low latency, and power efficiency required for next-gen AI.
The company has raised nearly $900M, reached a $3.75 billion valuation, and is moving toward high-volume deployment. This underlying hardware breakthrough is increasingly viewed as essential infrastructure for future massive AI compute clusters.
