A new paper explores whether AI can reach Einstein-level theory building in physics.
The authors point out a striking trend: AI's development in physics discovery is moving in reverse compared to human history. While humans progressed from ancient pattern prediction to principle-based universal theories like relativity, AI has shifted from explicit equation-discovery methods to highly accurate but unexplainable predictors like AlphaFold.
If this trend continues, AI will become extraordinarily good at prediction but may struggle to propose paradigm-level theories like quantum gravity. The paper highlights that the most critical missing skill for AI today is the ability to pose the right questions and invent guiding principles.
