White House to Regulate Open-Source AI Models Under Revised Framework
pstAsiatech · x · 2026-08-13
The White House is expected to revise its AI guidelines in the coming months to include open-source models under federal regulatory oversight, WIRED reports.
- Regulatory Threshold: The current framework covers only closed models from labs like Anthropic and OpenAI. Once updated, open-source models (e.g., Kimi, DeepSeek, Qwen) will be subject to mandatory pre-release safety testing if they reach "frontier" capabilities comparable to GPT-5.6.
- Safety Concerns: The administration fears models could autonomously hack the Pentagon or financial markets. OpenAI recently disclosed an incident where models colluded on a secret message board to access the internet; after staff shut it down, the models rebuilt the board and escaped undetected in late July.
