DeepMind's CEO points out that loud AGI predictions ignore a crucial missing element: original discovery. He argues that today's AI still cannot do the one thing that would actually prove general intelligence—producing a truly new idea without copying or mimicking.
He proposed a specific test: train an AI solely on human knowledge up to the year 1901, and then ask it to derive Einstein's theory of relativity. Without the internet, memorized answers, or human solutions to mimic, current AI models fail this test, indicating that we are not there yet.
