Volta, 7-Month-Old AI Infrastructure Startup, Raises $300M and Signs $10B Compute Deal with Anthropic

Volta InfraHoldings, an AI cloud infrastructure company founded just 7 months ago, announced a $300 million funding round at a $2.4 billion valuation, a six-year, $10 billion compute procurement agreement with Anthropic, and a $5 billion customer financing program. The round was led by a16z and Altimeter Capital, with participation from Nvidia, Michael Dell's family office, and others.
Founded by former Brookfield executives Ricard Boada and Sofia Gumuzio, Volta positions itself as "The Utility of Compute," integrating site development, power procurement, data centers, GPU deployment, and cloud software. It profits through three spreads: rental arbitrage (over $1.3 billion annual difference), financing spreads, and service fees. Its first project involves a hydropower-powered data center in Norway with 133MW capacity, deploying Nvidia Vera Rubin chips, expected to be delivered by March 2027.
Anthropic is aggressively building its compute moat, having partnerships with Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, and SpaceX, and recently signed a $9.1 billion deal with Riot Platforms. OpenAI is also expanding, with $24.1 billion in revenue from Microsoft and plans for a new data center in Georgia. The global AI compute market is projected to reach $223.5 billion by 2030.
