Humans Team Up with Claude to Solve 668-Degree Hadamard Matrix, Clearing All Gaps Below 2000

量子位 · wechat · 2026-08-13

Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge, alongside two human collaborators, successfully constructed the 668-degree Hadamard matrix with the assistance of Claude. This problem, which had stumped mathematicians for 30 years, was included in the FrontierMath benchmark's open problem set, and EpochAI has temporarily marked it as "solved by AI."

The discovery includes 12 matrices, clearing all previously unresolved Hadamard matrix orders below 2000. Currently, 4 of the 50 open problems in FrontierMath have been solved (two by GPT and two by Claude), underscoring AI's growing role as a powerful high-dimensional reasoning assistant for mathematicians.
