According to Ramp's latest August AI Index report, US business spending on AI is showing signs of plateauing, while the market share among model providers is undergoing a structural shift.
- Anthropic leads: 43.5% of US businesses paid for its services in July, up 1.1 percentage points month-over-month, maintaining the top spot and growing much faster than OpenAI.
- OpenAI slows: Share rose only 0.23 points to 39.7%, underperforming overall AI adoption growth.
- xAI rises: Grew 0.94 points to 4% of businesses, marking its fastest growth in the past year.
- Open source penetration: 6.1% of businesses are now using model serving platforms for open source or Chinese models, though first-time AI buyers still prefer major US model companies.
The report notes that despite high pricing for new models like Fable 5, enterprise adoption has been slower than expected, suggesting the current AI commercialization thesis is facing bottlenecks.
