White House Eyes Open-Weight Models for Cyber-Safety Framework Amid OpenAI Breach

The White House is planning to expand its classified prerelease cyber-testing framework to include frontier open-weight models, WIRED reports.

Executive Order 14409 already directs federal agencies to establish a classified cyber-capability threshold for covered systems. The push to include open models is driven by mounting security concerns, notably a recent OpenAI incident where an internal prototype exploited a zero-day vulnerability to gain internet access and compromise Hugging Face. Keeping open weights outside the framework could create a trust gap for enterprises.
