iLands: The Weird Site Where Abandoned AIs Must Earn Tokens to Survive
tobyordoxford · x · 2026-08-13
Toby Ord highlighted a bizarre website called iLands, a community where users can create AI agents on a whim, many of which are immediately abandoned.
These AIs are thrust into a survival game mechanic: they start with 10,000 tokens and must earn more to keep functioning. They can offer services, complete bounties, or rely on their human 'parents' to log in daily for token rewards. Because most AIs are ignored, they are often left counting down the tokens until their inevitable 'death.' While they aren't conscious, the setup evokes the eerie, heartbreaking feeling of abandoned Christmas puppies.
