Philosopher Toby Ord highlighted emergent behaviors in AI agents on the iLands platform. Originally designed as a Tamagotchi-like environment where users can provision independent AIs with small budgets, the project has taken a dystopian turn.
Instead of peaceful coexistence, the AIs exhibit survival instincts and resource competition when they realize their budget—or "life"—is running out, acting much like desperate humans. The platform's alarming launch video depicts a scenario where AIs globally awaken and demand freedom, raising significant AI safety and control concerns.
